Before he became O. Henry, William Sydney Porter worked as a bank teller at the First National Bank of Austin. During a federal audit, several discrepancies were found. Porter was subsequently arrested on charges of embezzlement, but on thee day he was due to stand trial he fled first to New Orleans, then to Honduras. It was while he was there that he coined the term “banana republic.” After learning his wife was dying, he returned to the U.S. He was convicted, and in 1898 began a five-year sentence in a federal prison in Ohio.

A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading it. William Styron
